چکیده

ABSTRACT Hydroxyl ($\rm OH$) is known to form efficiently in cold gas (T ∼ 100 K) along with the molecule $\rm H_2$ and can be used as an efficient tracer of diffuse molecular interstellar medium (ISM). Using a simple formalism describing H\, I/H_2$ transition reduced network major chemical reactions, we present semi-analytical prescription estimate abundances O-bearing molecules ISM. We show that predictions based on our are good agreement estimates obtained using meudon pdr code which utilizes full reaction network. investigate dependence relative OH/H\, I$ OH/H_2$ variations physical conditions i.e. metallicity, number density (n), cosmic ray ionization rate (ζ), strength UV field (χ) medium. find observed Galactic ISM reproduced by models n 50 cm−3, χ 1 (Mathis field), ζ 3 × 10−17 s−1, variation about dex allowed around these values. constrained column distribution function at z 3, OH$ discuss future prospects upcoming large radio absorption line surveys.

Infrared Emission from Interstellar Dust. Ii. the Diffuse Interstellar Medium

We present a quantitative model for the infrared emission from dust in the di†use interstellar medium. The model consists of a mixture of amorphous silicate grains and carbonaceous grains, each with a wide size distribution ranging from molecules containing tens of atoms to large grains km in diameter. Z1 We assume that the carbonaceous grains have properties like polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbo...

Modelling Faraday Screens in the Interstellar Medium

Maps of Galactic polarized continuum emission at 1408, 1660, and 1713 MHz towards the local Taurus molecular cloud complex were made with the Effelsberg 100-m telescope. Minima in the polarized emission which are located at the boundary of a molecular cloud were detected. Beside high rotation measures and unusual spectral indices of the polarized intensity, these features are associated with th...

H 2 formation and excitation in the diffuse interstellar medium

We use far-UV absorption spectra obtained with FUSE towards three late B stars to study the formation and excitation of H2 in the diffuse ISM. The data interpretation relies on a model of the chemical and thermal balance in photon-illuminated gas. The data constrain well the n R product between gas density and H2 formation rate on dust grains: n R = 1 to 2.2 10s. For each line of sight the mean...

The chemistry of transient microstructure in the diffuse interstellar medium

Transient microstructure in the diffuse interstellar medium has been observed towards galactic and extragalactic sources for decades, usually in lines of atoms and ions, and, more recently, in molecular lines. Evidently, there is a molecular component to the transient microstructure. In this paper we explore the chemistry that may arise in such microstructure. We use a PDR code to model the con...

Detection of in the Diffuse Interstellar Medium: the Galactic Center

Absorption lines of have been detected in the spectra of two infrared sources in the Galactic 3 center and also toward the heavily reddened star Cygnus OB2 No. 12, whose line of sight is believed to include only di†use interstellar gas. The absorptions toward the Galactic center sources (IRS 3 and GCS 3-2) probably are due to both in di†use gas and in molecular clouds. The ratios of line equiva...
